EthereumZuri.ch (14th-16th April 2023) brings the Ethereum community to the most crypto-friendly country and the cradle of blockchain research. Talk Abstract

Are Blockchains the solution voting system's fundamental problems? Or is Blockchain-Voting considered harmful? This talk focuses on these two questions, detailing cryptographic primitives and design choices in voting systems.

Talk Description

Digitizing governmental processes has progressed around the globe. However, voting and electoral processes still need to be digitized. Why is that so? This talk takes you on a journey from a centralized to a decentralized voting system, taking paper-based procedures into account. Design decisions are outlined on the journey, with the technical architecture, voting protocol choices, and their respective tradeoffs. Thus, the talk includes high-level descriptions of Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Proofs and other relevant cryptographic primitives (e.g., Mixnets). Ultimately, the designed system is evaluated from a privacy and verifiability perspective, providing facets to answer why deploying such a voting system is highly challenging.
